PowerWorld Corporation
provides software training in the use of PowerWorld Simulator and
add-on products OPF, SCOPF, ATC, PVQV, and SimAuto. Our training also
covers some basics of the engineering, operations, and economics of
interconnected power systems. We can also provide custom software training,
tailored to your interests and availability, delivered at your site.
If you are interested in software
training please call us at +1 (217) 384-6330 or email us at

Courses: PowerWorld
Simulator, including OPF, SCOPF, OPF Reserves, ATC, PVQV, and SimAuto Add-On Tools
PowerWorld Simulator training is offered in three separate 2-day
courses as follows:
The courses covers techniques for power system
modeling and simulation, providing a framework for analysis of
system design, operation, and economics. PowerWorld Simulator will
be used for development and demonstration of system models. Course
participants will learn to develop power system models, perform
system analysis, and to create visual simulations that illustrate
their results. A detailed description of each module will be posted
soon. In total, the courses cover:
- Interactive simulation of large-scale
interconnected power systems
- Economics of generators and interchange
transactions
- Use of animated one-line diagrams to rapidly
assess power system operating conditions
- Utilization of pan and zoom features to
simulate and display systems
of almost any size at different levels of detail
- Reduction of large system models into
equivalent circuits
- Advanced visualization techniques such as
contouring of bus and flow data
- Construction of equivalent power systems
- Contingency Analysis
- Unbalanced Fault Analysis
- Linear Analysis Techniques including
Power Transfer Distribution Factor (PTDFs),
Transmission Loading Relief (TLR) Sensitivities,
Generation Shift Factors (GSFs),
Outage Transfer Distribution Factors (OTDFs),
and Line Outage Distribution Factors (LODFs)
- OPF - Optimal Power Flow
- SCOPF - Security Constrained Optimal Power Flow
- OPF Reserves - Energy market co-optimized with reserve or
forward capacity market
- ATC - Available Transfer Capability
- PVQV - Voltage Stability Analysis
- SimAuto - Automation Server
Simulator OPF allows you to optimally dispatch
generation in an area or group of areas while simultaneously
enforcing the transmission line and interface limits. Course
participants will learn how to use Simulator OPF to calculate
marginal prices at each bus in a system (also known as locational
marginal prices or LMPs). Other topics covered will include the
introduction of the economic principles underlying spot-pricing,
data requirements of the OPF, and interpreting unenforceable
constraints.
Simulator ATC allows you to determine the maximum
MW transfer possible between two parts of the power system without
violating any transmission line limits. This is the same calculation
commonly performed by system operators or market operators.
Simulator PVQV allows you to identify static voltage stability limits
and reactive power margins. You can then use this information to determine how
to strengthen the system by
modeling and evaluating the effectiveness of proposed changes.
Simulator SimAuto is a COM Automation Server which allows you to
control Simulator from custom applications developed in environments
such as Visual Basic for Applications, C++, and MATLAB.
Who Should Attend?
System planning and operation technicians,
engineers, electricity market analysts and managers involved in
power system network analysis. Also all individuals involved in the
presentation of power system network topics to technical and
non-technical audiences will benefit from this course.
Course participants are NOT required to be
licensed users of PowerWorld Simulator.
Equipment
All computer equipment for the course will be
provided for training delivered in Champaign. Participants may be required to bring
computers for training delivered at other locations.

Travel Information
Several airports serve the Champaign-Urbana area.
The Champaign Airport (CMI) is only minutes away and taxi service
is available. You might also consider the
Bloomington Airport (BMI), which is about
55 miles (about 60 minutes) from Champaign and offers more frequent daily
arrivals and departures.
If you prefer to fly into a larger airport and drive to Champaign,
we recommend the
Indianapolis
International Airport, especially if you are
able to arrange a direct, non-stop flight from your home airport. At 125 miles, it is closer than Chicago
and you will experience much less traffic on the ground.
Chicago's O’Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW) airports are 155
and 130 miles to the North, respectively. (Driving time from
Chicago is about 2½ hours in light traffic, but may be significantly
greater in heavy traffic.)
The Homewood Suites is adjacent to the Hilton Garden Inn
and is located approximately two miles
south of the I-74 Neil Street exit.
For those staying at the Homewood Suites, the hotel offers shuttle services to
and from the airport, available from 7 AM to 11 PM. PowerWorld personnel will arrive at 8:00 AM
on the first day of training to take you from the hotel to the training facilities and
will arrange transportation for the days that follow.
