Implication of Interarea Transactions with B7Flat System

This is a team exercise using PowerWorld Simulator. You will use the simulation cases already provided with the software. Teams should have two to three students

  1. Perform and evaluate a 50MW transaction between the Left and Right Areas by doing the following: determine the buy and sell quotes for the transaction, and using the split-the-savings rule (that is, the rule that says that the price of transaction is halfway between the buy and sell quotes) determine the change in total costs in the two areas as a result of the transaction. Determine the effect of the transaction on the Top Area by determining the change in cost and losses as a result of the transaction.
  2. Determine everything listed for the first part for an additional 50MW transaction. In this case, there will be a transmission line overload in the Top Area. Take the Top Area off of economic dispatch and find a reallocation of generation that eliminates the overload before you determine the change in costs and losses. Be sure to keep ACE equal to zero. Describe how you re-allocated the generation outputs to solve the congestion problem.

Thanks to Dennis Ray of UW-Madison for this problem.
